Varanasi is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world and one of the most important spiritual centers of India. This documentary photography project was created during a journey through the city, focusing on the lives of Hindu sadhus, Aghori ascetics, Naga sadhus, and other spiritual practitioners who live along the banks of the sacred Ganges River.

The goal of the project was not only to create portraits but also to document everyday life, rituals, traditions, and the unique culture that surrounds these communities. We spent time observing religious ceremonies, morning rituals, meditation practices, and daily interactions that rarely become visible to outsiders.

Many of the portraits were created in natural environments where the subjects live, pray, and meet pilgrims. Rather than staging scenes, the approach focused on authenticity and visual storytelling. Photography and video were used together to capture both individual personalities and the broader atmosphere of Varanasi.

One of the most memorable aspects of the journey was the opportunity to meet people whose lives are completely dedicated to spiritual practice. Despite their differences in traditions and beliefs, many shared a sense of calm, discipline, and detachment from material life that contrasted sharply with the busy streets surrounding them.

This project became more than a photography assignment. It was an unforgettable cultural experience and a visual exploration of one of the world's most fascinating spiritual traditions. Through portraits, documentary photography, and video storytelling, the project seeks to preserve a small part of the atmosphere, mystery, and humanity found in Varanasi.
